All About Us

West Virginia Muzzle Loaders Association is a statewide organization of muzzle loading enthusiasts who have united to achieve a common goal In 1977, at a shoot near Sutton, WV, a group of traditional shooters from around the state made a decision to promote and preserve the traditional style of muzzle loading shooting. They wanted to encourage and promote a better understanding of early American black powder firearms, the historical aspects of these firearms played in setting our country and their artistic contributions to our society.

During the first weekend of August 1977, the first WV State Offhand Championship shoot was held in Keyser, WV. At this shoot a meeting was held to formally organize a state organization of muzzle loader shooters, builders, hunter, and history enthusiasts. Officers were elected and the WVMLA was created.

Two decisions were made at this first meeting on the direction the Association should take. The first was the sponsorship and promotion of a yearly State Offhand Championship Shoot to be held at different locations throughout the state. The second was to work with whomever to create a muzzle loading deer hunting season. With much hard work and persistence both goal have been met.

Shooter safety & sportsmanship

The WVMLA is very active in legislative matters and the Department of Natural Resources policy matters. The officers and members of the Association work to improve conditions for the sportsmen and women of West Virginia and will continue to do so in the future.

One of the main goals of the West Virginia Muzzle loaders Association now is to promote the safe use of muzzle loading firearms. Seminars and clinics are held by local clubs throughout the state to educate the shooters about these firearms.
